WELCOME TO THE BARRACKS
THE OLD MT COOK POLICE STATION
We hope you will love staying in this historic building just as much as we do. The Barracks was the original Mt Cook police station, built in 1894. It has a lot of history and we are very proud to be the caretakers of this property. She sits just minutes away from some of the best eateries and venues in Wellington and there is secure parking for 4 cars.

1 bedroom with a queen size bed
1 bedroom with two single beds
1 double bed size pull-out couch in lounge
You may enjoy complete access to all parts of the property and the rear courtyard.
Secure parking for 4 cars
FOOD AND DRINK
Your kitchen is well equipped for preparing your own food and there are three supermarkets close by: Moore Wilson (5min walk) (delicatessen supermarket on College St – we highly recommend a visit), Countdown in Newtown at the end of Tasman St and New World at the other end of Tory St down by the waterfront. Both New World and Countdown are approx. 15 mins walk away. If it’s restaurant food you’re after, you’re spoilt for choice in the heart of Wellington! Here are a few suggestions located within 15mins walk:
Restaurants:
Ombra (Italian) – Cnr Cuba and Vivian
Logan Brown (High end NZ Fusion) – Cnr Cuba and Vivian
Capitol (NZ – highly recommend) – by Embassy Theatre
Havana Bar (Carribian – best cocktails in town) – Wigan St
Loretta (casual best vegetarian food ever) – Cuba St
Prefab (great for lunch) – Jessie St
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Busses for around Wellington and to the train station are located on Taranaki Street and are very regular. Trains to the Hutt Valley and Kapiti Coast all depart from the main station. Tickets can be purchased with cash on board but appropriate change is appreciated. Timetables and fare information can be found at www.metlink.org.nz. It is possible to purchase/use a Snapper card to get around on both busses and trains.
SWIMMING/BEACHES
Oriental Beach is a safe swimming beach and possibly the most picturesque middle of the city spot to hang out and watch the crowds. The commuter ferry down by Shed 5 on the waterfront pier to Days Bay Beach is also a popular choice. If you are here in winter a dip in Freyberg Pool on the waterfront never goes amiss either.
We hope you enjoy your stay!
Outdoor chairs and tables are located in Caretaker cupboard under the stairs.
We tend to keep to a shoes off policy in The Barracks and appreciate your support with this too.
Hot water is supplied by a gas infinity system. If you experience any problems with your hot water supply or electricity, please don’t hesitate to contact your host.
Please leave underfloor heating settings as is. The floor temperature sensor automatically adjusts to ensure a warm environment.
Tap water in Wellington is safe to drink.
In a Civil Defence emergency requiring evacuation, WREMO recommends persons located at this address to stay put and gather at the park to the front of the building.
